Columbarium Niches

Nirvana Memorial Garden · Thian Leng · Lin San Temple

A columbarium niche is the compartment an urn is placed in and kept. What differs between the suites below is the building each sits in, the figure it is centred on, and how the compartments themselves are finished. Where a site is freehold that is noted, because it decides whether a niche stays put permanently or for a fixed term.

Nirvana Block B — H510 法光阁

Choa Chu Kang · Block B, Level 5

H510 法光阁 is on Level 5 of Block B, centred on Guanyin. It is the only suite in Block B with a window, so the hall takes natural light through the day, and it is laid out with two entrances rather than one. Single, double and tower niches are available, and the suite is air-conditioned.

  • Interior of the H510 法光阁 suite, looking towards the central altar
  • Seating area between the niche walls inside the H510 法光阁 suite
  • Wide view of the H510 法光阁 hall with the Guanyin statue above the altar
Nirvana Block B — H522 法恩阁

Choa Chu Kang

H522 法恩阁 is a niche suite in Block B, finished in white with an orchid motif running through the door panels. Single and double niches are available.

  • Niche wall inside the H522 法恩阁 suite, with an orchid motif panel
  • Corridor between the niche walls inside the H522 法恩阁 suite
Thian Leng 天灵总道堂 — Suite S2

Kembangan · Freehold

Thian Leng 天灵总道堂 is at Kembangan and holds its land on a freehold title, so a niche placed there stays permanently. Its niches are in the S2 suite (福位), in the same building as its ancestral tablet hall. The suite is finished in white.

  • Niche suite S2 at Thian Leng, with a bench between the walls
  • Niche wall in the S2 suite at Thian Leng
Lin San Temple 灵山寺

Geylang · Freehold

Lin San Temple is at Geylang and holds its land on a freehold title, so a niche placed there stays permanently. Its 帝王苑 Imperial range covers both niches and ancestral tablets; the Imperial 3 door panel is designed around Guanyin. The halls are air-conditioned.

  • 帝王苑 Imperial 3 niche door panel at Lin San Temple, featuring Guanyin
  • Door panel and interior designs for 帝王苑 Imperial 1 at Lin San Temple
  • 帝王苑 Imperial 1 artwork for Lin San Temple

Tenure: freehold and leasehold

Tenure decides how long a niche or an ancestral tablet stays where it is placed. It is set by the location rather than by the product, and there are three separate locations here — one memorial garden and two temples.

    Freehold

99-year lease
Held for a term of ninety-nine years — a long and clearly defined period to plan around.
Freehold
No end date. Nothing to renew, and no move at the end of a term.

Neither is better than the other. Freehold matters a great deal to some families; others choose Choa Chu Kang for reasons of their own — the grounds, the halls, or simply because the rest of the family is already there. It is a difference to weigh, not a ranking.
